Historical Note: The USS Monitor was a trailblazer in the iron-hulled steamship revolution. Built during America's most turbulent time, she proudly held the title as the Union Navy's first ironclad warship. Her legendary debut in Hampton Roads on March 9th, 1862, will forever be etched in history - where under the command of Lieutenant John Worden, she clashed with the mighty casemate ironclad CSS Virginia, an unforgettable encounter that paved the way for armored ships to come. The genius behind her iconic revolving turret is American inventor Theodore Timby, a testament to innovative design. As it soon became clear, his revolutionary creation was to be the cornerstone of warships yet to follow in its footsteps. Orders issued on December 24th, 1862, saw Monitor sailing for Beaufort, North Carolina to join forces with USS Passaic and USS Montauk for an audacious blockade against Wilmington. Tragedy soon followed when her crew was faced with a tempestuous sea. Though ill-fated, Monitor's valiant attempts proved her design excelled in river combat; yet it was this very design that ultimately sealed its fate in the open waters off Cape Hatteras. In command of John P. Bankhead, the ship set sail under the watchful eye of USS Rhode Island, which soon realized they were facing a catastrophic situation - 31st December was no ordinary day for Monitor and its crew. History now tells us that the vessel's doomed fate occurred approximately sixteen miles off Cape Hatteras, resulting in the tragic loss of sixteen lives. Rescue operations by life boats from Rhode Island managed to salvage forty-seven men, bringing a poignant close to this heart-wrenching chapter in Monitor's history. The battle-hardened specifications for this incredible ship: Displacement: 987 long tons (1,003 t). Length: 179 ft (54.6 m). Beam: 41 ft 6 in (12.6 m). Draft: 10 ft 6 in (3.2 m). Installed power: A thunderous 320 ihp (240 kW), harnessed through the unrelenting work of two Horizontal fire-tube boilers. Propulsion comes in the form of a mighty propeller, coupled with a steadfast Vibrating-lever steam engine, granting it a steady pace of 6 knots (11 km/h; 6.9 mph). Under normal circumstances, its complement stands at an impressive crew size: forty-nine officers and enlisted men. A powerful armament was deployed to protect the Monitor - two behemoth 11-inch (280 mm) smoothbore Dahlgren guns that shook the foundations of the sea. Tremendous strength and resilience shine through in her armor plating, where you'll find the heart-pounding 8 inch (203 mm) of the turret. Its unyielding protection also boasts a waterline belt that reaches an incredible 3–5 in (76–127 mm). Ruggedly robust is also its deck with a solid layer of armor 1 in (25 mm). An unforgettable monument stands in tribute to innovative craftsmanship. This extraordinary model has been built specifically for the joy and magic of 3D printing.
