Historical note: USS Keokuk was an ironclad screw steamer built for the United States Navy named after the city of Keokuk, Iowa. She was laid down in New York City by designer Charles W. Whitney at J.S. Underhill Shipbuilders, on 11th Street. USS Keokuk's new design made her one of the first warships to be completely built out of iron, with only wood used for deck planks and filling in armor cladding. This innovative ship departed New York on March 11, 1863 to join the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron. She sailed south to attack Charleston, South Carolina, and arrived at Newport News, Virginia two days later.
