USS Iowa (BB-61) was a retired battleship that served as the lead ship of its class, and it was the fourth U.S. Navy vessel to be named after the state of Iowa. Due to the cancellation of the Montana-class battleships, Iowa became the last lead ship in any U.S. Navy battleship class and was the only one of its kind to serve in the Atlantic Ocean during World War II. During World War II, USS Iowa carried President Franklin D. Roosevelt across the Atlantic to Mers El Kebir, Algeria, en route to a meeting with Prime Minister Winston Churchill of Britain and Joseph Stalin, leader of the Soviet Union, in Tehran in 1943. When it was transferred to the Pacific Fleet in 1944, Iowa fired at beachheads at Saipan, Guam, and Iwo Jima, as well as in support of ground troops on Tarawa. In March 1945, USS Iowa sortied with TF58 for Operation Iceberg. Iowa survived Typhoon Cobra during World War II, and it served the remainder of its active career supporting fleet operations. It spent 20 years as a training ship after decommissioning in 1963. USS Iowa (BB-61) was reactivated during the 1980s Gulf Crisis for a final tour of duty. It returned to a mothballed status following Desert Storm. On March 26, 2012, Governor Brown announced plans to bring Battleship Iowa to Los Angeles as part of his vision for an 100 acre public waterfront attraction in San Pedro. This attraction is projected to cost $350 million and could take seven years or more to complete. It has been reported that many of the funds may come from private sources, not from taxes.
