Aircraft Carrier History The USS Hornet CV/CVA/CVS-12 was built in August 1942, initially named USS Kearsarge but renamed after the lost USS Hornet (CV-8) in October 1942. The eighth ship to bear this name, it was commissioned in November 1943. After three months of training, it joined US forces in the Pacific War and played a major role in World War II battles. It also participated in Operation Magic Carpet, returning troops home. Pacific Battles Following World War II, the USS Hornet served in the Vietnam War and took part in the Apollo program, recovering astronauts as they returned from the Moon. The ship was decommissioned in 1970 but designated a National Historic Landmark in recognition of its historical significance.
