The Freedom class is one of two classes of littoral combat ships built specifically for the United States Navy. Lockheed Martin proposed the Freedom class as a contender for a fleet of small, multipurpose warships designed to operate in the challenging environments of the littoral zone. Two ships were initially approved to compete with General Dynamics' Independence-class design for a construction contract that could potentially reach up to 55 vessels. The Navy had initially planned to accept only two Freedom and Independence variants, but they have since announced plans to order up to ten additional ships of each class, bringing the total number of ships per class to twelve. As of 2015, three active ships are part of the fleet, with an additional five under construction. Starting in 2019, ships of this class will be designated as fast frigates (FF), featuring increased firepower and heavier armor to enhance their combat capabilities.
