USS Essex was a major aircraft carrier for the US Navy during World War II, and it played a crucial role in many key campaigns across the Pacific Theater of Operations. The ship earned a Presidential Unit Citation and received an impressive 13 battle stars during its initial deployment. Following the end of hostilities, the vessel underwent significant modernization in the early 1950s to enhance its capabilities as both an offensive and defensive asset for the navy. Its role transitioned to being a primary opponent-killer or anti-submarine warfare aircraft carrier. The ship served crucially during the Korean War and earned additional recognition including four battle stars and Military Commendation Decoration, reflecting the invaluable service it provided. In another mission in the 1960s, USS Essex acted as the prime retriever for the historic Apollo 7 space flight. After being decommissioned for the second time in 1969, the ship went through another round of service termination, finally meeting its end on June 1st, 1975 when it was dismantled and sold for scrap at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard by a surplus metal agency. In both military service periods USS Essex made numerous invaluable contributions to naval warfare efforts during two pivotal conflicts.
