The USS Baltimore, a veteran warship from the Battle of Manila Bay, has been scaled down to fit a naval wargaming model. Built in Philadelphia by Armstrong shipyard in 1887, this protected cruiser was designed to serve the US Navy. Commissioned into service in January 1890, she played a key role in protecting American citizens during the Chilean Civil War of 1891 and later served with distinction under Admiral Dewey's command at the Battle of Manila Bay on May 1st, 1898. Prior to World War I, she was converted into a minelayer and eventually decommissioned in 1922. The Baltimore boasted four 8-inch guns mounted in sponsons on either side of her bow and stern, as well as six 6-inch guns along the sides. Her secondary armament consisted of four 6-pounder guns, two 3-pounder Hotchkiss revolving cannons, two 1-pounder Hotchkiss revolving cannons, and two .45 caliber Gatling guns. Unfortunately, she was never equipped with the four 14-inch torpedo tubes that were included in her design. The Baltimore's gun shields were a sturdy 4.5 inches thick, while her armored conning tower stood at an impressive 3 inches. The armored deck was sloped on its sides to a thickness of up to 4 inches and measured 2.5 inches elsewhere. Her engineering plant featured four coal-fired cylindrical boilers producing steam for two horizontal triple expansion engines that produced a total of 10,750 horsepower. This enabled the Baltimore to reach speeds of up to 20 knots during trials, although her designed speed was 19 knots. With 400 tons of coal on board, she had a range of 3,838 nautical miles at 10 knots, which could be increased to 850 tons for a range of 8,155 nautical miles. Please note that this model is not an exact representation of the USS Baltimore's original scale due to size limitations. At a smaller scale of 1/3000, some details may be lost. Printing at larger scales is possible but would reveal even more missing detail suited for the 1/2400 scale.
