Ancient Egyptians created ushabti figures, also known as shabtis or shawabtis, with various spellings such as ushabtiu in the plural form. These funerary figurines were placed among grave goods in tombs to serve as loyal servants for the deceased in the afterlife. Whenever called upon to perform manual labor, the ushabtis would answer, often carrying a hoe on their shoulder and a basket on their back, signifying their role as farmers for the deceased. The figurines' legs were frequently inscribed with hieroglyphs, providing a record of their intended purpose.
