Ancient Egyptians created ushabtis, also known as shabtis or shawabtis with various spellings, for funerary purposes. These small figurines were placed in tombs among grave goods and designed to act as servants or loyal workers for the deceased in the afterlife. If summoned, they would perform manual labor, typically farming, as implied by their tools: a hoe on their shoulder and a basket on their back. The ushabtis' readiness to serve was asserted through hieroglyphic inscriptions often found on their legs, declaring their willingness to respond to the gods' calls for work.
