cgstudio
A detailed, fully textured model of the USCG Eagle Eye unmanned vehicle is available. Two texture and color maps are included, representing U.S. Navy and U.S. Marines designs. The history of the Eagle Eye program began in 1993 with the TR911X 7/8th scale prototype, originally designed and built by Scaled Composites for a California research company. The composite airframe was powered by an Allison 250-C20 turboshaft engine mounted in the center fuselage, driving a tilting rotor at the end of each wing. The maiden flight took place on March 6, 1998, followed by entry into a flight test program. Land-based operations testing, Phase 1, was completed in April 1998. Sea-based testing, Phase 2, started shortly after that. One prototype was destroyed in an accident, but the second successfully completed the test program. These successes led to participation in the Deepwater program in 2002 and construction of the full-size vehicle, called the TR918, powered by a Pratt & Whitney Canada P200/55 turbo shaft engine. The Eagle Eye had been promoted for over a decade without finding a buyer, but in the summer of 2002, the U.S. Coast Guard ordered the UAV as part of the service's broad Deepwater re-equipment effort.
