USB Xylophone
thingiverse
An old metallophone toy has been revitalized with the help of an Arduino board, some electromagnets and printed parts. The rejuvenated metallophone can be played using a mouse, keyboard or MIDI files. Included in the software pack are samples from Georges Brassens, Agnes Obel, Yann Tiersen, Julian Nott, Michael Giacchino, and more. Flash (AS2) is used on the software side, while midicsv tool converts MIDI files into CSV format. The xylophone design has been shared in Thingiverse. Future plans include creating homemade solenoids and wooden bars for a more authentic sound. Assembly instructions are provided along with details of how to upload the program to Arduino board, configure server proxy, and launch it. The metallophone can be used as a ringtone, doorbell, alarm clock, memory game, educational toy, and more. A video showcasing Riverside by Agnes Obel played on the revitalized metallophone is available.
