I've been needing to design custom labware for our OpenTrons pipetting robot, but often the drawings supplied by the manufacturer are not labeled with the dimensions needed for creation of the labware in the OpenTrons tool.

So rather than trying to fudge it with bespoke measurements, I thought I'd make a parametric CAD model that allowed me to constrain the dimensions according to whatever precise measurements I had available, and then output a drawing annotated with measurements needed for the OpenTrons labware definition.

This is my first foray, using 1.1 mL strip tubes purchased from USA Scientific. (I believe these are the same as the Axygen product.) They are modeled parametrically in Fusion360, which I then used to export a drawing with the measurements required for an OpenTrons labware definition. It was also an opportunity for me to learn the "drawing" interface on Fusion360.

We are also looking at a similar product from VWR. When we need to test it out, I should be able to just enter the revised measurements into my parameters definition, and get the required measurements automatically!

Feel free to modify these to help define your own labware.

Print instructions

Category: Biology Summary

I've been needing to design custom labware for our OpenTrons pipetting robot, but often the drawings supplied by the manufacturer are not labeled with the dimensions needed for creation of the labware in the OpenTrons tool.

So rather than trying to fudge it with bespoke measurements, I thought I'd make a parametric CAD model that allowed me to constrain the dimensions according to whatever precise measurements I had available, and then output a drawing annotated with measurements needed for the OpenTrons labware definition.

This is my first foray, using 1.1 mL strip tubes purchased from USA Scientific.
