US Navy Des Moines-class Cruisers Reduced Scale Models Displayed here is a 1/1800th scale representation of the iconic Des Moines-class cruisers, a class of light warships commissioned by the US Navy during World War II's tumultuous period. Commissioning occurred later than planned in 1948. Initially, the Navy had ordered twelve ships, but unfortunately, only three vessels made it to completion due to cancellations of the remaining nine. A distinguishing feature of these cruisers is their array of heavy armaments, including nine powerful eight-inch guns and a dozen dual five-inch weapons designed for versatility in combat situations against both enemy aircraft and warships. In addition to these major assets, they also mounted smaller caliber antiaircraft defenses to protect them from incoming attacks. The cruiser on display forms part of a diverse collection centered around Cold War-era warships, with the promise that more additions will be added as this extensive exhibit evolves. Update (20 August 2019): A newer element has been included.
