When the rain outside is pouring down, work can certainly wait. It's a perfect time to tackle something mindless yet productive, like counting up that spare change. Everyone has their own container for throwing in their daily spare coins (mine's a sleek metal nautilus I received as a Christmas gift). But, those small amounts of money really do add up over time. This design was inspired by the brilliant work at http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:11322, and while that thing probably works great, it seemed way too complicated. So, I simplified the concept to four essential parts; one for counting, three for sorting. Take a handful of change and throw it into the quarter sieve. Shake out anything that's not a quarter into a quart Chinese takeout container (which is also handy for storing this apparatus when not in use). Repeat the process with nickels and pennies, but go with smaller handfuls because their diameters are so similar. The overall process is pretty quick. Once you've separated your change, just load it into the counter and then the wrappers. A note about the counter: Z-axis calibrations vary, so make sure to manually count the first time through. Once you know exactly where 40 or 50 count falls on your print, mark it with a Sharpie if it's not perfect – and you think you might forget what the sweet spot looks like. I've included the STEP and Rhino files in case anyone needs to remix this design for other currencies.
