The United States Capitol Building serves as the key meeting spot for the United States Congress, a legislative group responsible for overseeing the federal government of the United States. Situated in Washington, D.C., this impressive structure rises high atop Capitol Hill at the eastern end of the National Mall. Even though it is not located near the exact center of the federal district, the Capitol Building remains the crucial landmark by which both halves of the District are divided and the city was carefully planned. Both sides of the United States Capitol Building are officially considered fronts, but historically speaking, only the east front was designed for visitor arrivals. Like other government buildings housing the executive and judicial branches, it is built in a unique neoclassical style featuring a striking white exterior. Thomas Jefferson came up with a plan in spring 1792 to hold a design contest for both the Capitol Building and the President's House, and he gave a four-month deadline for the designs. At the last minute on January 31, 1793, an entry from amateur architect William Thornton caught the attention of Washington and Jefferson, who praised its Grandeur, Simplicity, and Beauty. The original design by Thornton went through changes by Benjamin Henry Latrobe and then Charles Bulfinch. Thomas U. Walter and August Schoenborn, a German immigrant, came up with the plans for the current dome and House and Senate wings, which were completed under the supervision of Edward Clark.
