The SOF Combat Assault Rifle, or SCAR, is a highly versatile modular rifle designed by Fabrique Nationale (FN) specifically for the U.S. Special Operations Command (SOCOM). Created to meet the exacting requirements of the SCAR competition, this family of rifles boasts two main types: the SCAR-L, optimized for light use and chambered in 5.56 mm NATO cartridge, and the SCAR-H, built for heavy applications, firing 7.62 mm NATO ammunition. Additional variants, including sniper and Close Quarters Combat models, further expand the capabilities of these rifles. Having emerged victorious in the competition, the FN SCAR system is currently undergoing final development and rigorous testing phases as of late 2006.
