A finely crafted marble urn, known as a cinerarium, stands as a poignant testament to the devotion and status of Aelia Postumia, a former slave who rose through the ranks to create a lasting tribute for herself and her beloved husband. The inscription on its surface is a beautiful translation of "To the deified dead… Aelia Postumia," whose life was marked by a remarkable journey from servitude to freedom. Born into bondage, Aelia Postumia forged an unbreakable bond with her deserving husband, whom she loved and cherished for twenty-three years. Together, they formed a partnership that defied convention, as former slaves like themselves were often overlooked in the creation of funerary monuments. However, this urn stands as a testament to their enduring love and commitment, showcasing exquisite craftsmanship that rivals even the finest examples. The intricate carvings on its surface are a masterclass in delicate detail, a clear indication of the high esteem in which Aelia Postumia held her husband. The fact that she was able to commission such an elaborate monument speaks volumes about her rise from humble beginnings and her subsequent success. Made in Italy during the tumultuous period between AD 25-50, this urn is a poignant reminder of the power of love and determination. Found in its native land, this stunning piece of art has been generously gifted to the museum by J. Disney, who recognized its significance as a cultural artifact GR.56.1850.
