Urge for life

Krop showcased this sculpture at the international contest for the Monument to the Unknown Political Prisoner, launched by the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London in 1951. The designs were displayed in London in December 1952 and later in Antwerp from March to April 1953. Hildo Krop submitted his image 'Urge for Life' created between 1949 and 1951 for this contest, but it did not receive an award. In this statue, two of Krop's most iconic themes intersect: 'Mother Earth' and the 'Faun'. The faun is wrapped around Mother Earth's throne: on the left side are goat legs, on the back a curled tail and twisted fox head with a hand and bird, while on the right is a fox head. Two birds also appear on the woman's left head. The faun's face is not clearly visible - a characteristic often seen in Krop's work, where the head is "crushed".
