A puukko is a Finnish fixed-blade knife that's compact, highly versatile, and designed for everyday carry - typically crafted by its owner, who carefully shapes the handle to fit their hand perfectly. As someone who spends most of my time creating, cooking, or exploring, I often find myself needing a knife within hours, making me appreciate the puukko's timeless design principles. However, living in a major city has changed things - despite it being legal to carry a small knife, many people still view it as unusual behavior. Inspired by Tapio Wirkkala's innovative designs, I've been working on a modern, high-performance knife suitable for urban life. The latest iteration incorporates the exceptional Lauri PT 77 blade, known for its carbon steel and scandi grind, which offers unparalleled sharpness and edge retention. Paired with an asymmetrical handle, this design allows for secure carrying close to the body while providing a comfortable grip. The shape of this knife effortlessly transitions between utilitarian, friendly, elegant, or powerful depending on the color and material used. This version is specifically designed for left-handed users and worn on the left side; simply mirror the design for right-handed use. Currently, I'm using a simple leather sheath, folded and stitched, but an improved design is in the works - stay tuned for updates. Update: After daily use worldwide since its initial posting, I'm even more satisfied with this design than when it first began, and I'm excited to see how it continues to evolve.
