Hnery Moore, renowned artist, commented: 'In 1955 I was approached with the proposal of creating a sculpture for a courtyard in Milan's new Olivetti building. Upon visiting the site, a solitary Lombardy poplar standing behind the building convinced me that a vertical work would effectively counterbalance the horizontal rhythm of the structure. This idea eventually evolved into the ‘Upright Motifs’. Returning to England, I began developing the series of maquettes. Initially, I experimented with balancing different forms on top of one another, achieving results reminiscent of North-West American totem poles. However, as I continued, my efforts gained more cohesion and organic unity, eventually leading to a particular piece (later named ‘Glenkiln Cross’) that took on the shape of a crucifix – a worn-down body merged with a cross.'
