The Philadelphia-born Harry Rosin (1897-1973) was New Hope’s most famous sculptor. Rosin studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts before leaving for an extended six-year sojourn in Paris, where he was exposed to Cubism and other contemporary stylistic developments. Still, Rosin preferred realism and simplicity to abstraction, and embraced naturalism and emotional expressiveness. He spent four years in Tahiti during the 1930s, and the experience had a profound influence on his work.
