Untitled at MoMA, New York
myminifactory
Made in 1959, this work, Bontecou's first wall-mounted steel-and-canvas sculptures, incorporates soiled canvas taken from discarded conveyor belts below the artist's East Village apartment. She stretched pieces of fabric across sections of steel armature and fastened them to metal with wire, creating a surface resembling stained glass windows or patchwork quilts. Early reliefs conjure associations, this particular one resembles an aerial view of an otherworldly landscape, like the first man-made satellite Sputnik's orbit around the earth. Bontecou recalled this time, "I felt great excitement when little Sputnik flew." This object is part of "Scan The World", a non-profit initiative to create a digital archive of fully 3D printable sculptures and artworks from across the globe for public access.
