Limestone busts carved from Palmyrene funerary reliefs reveal women wearing fur-edged mantles, holding fabric ends in their left hands and raising their right arms to shoulder level. High-wreathed coiffures adorn these female figures, with elaborate ornamental bands hanging from their foreheads, featuring three tails that frame their brows. They also wear necklaces, finger-rings, and ear-rings. A miniature male figure overlooking a suspended cloth in the background holds an object. These stone portraits of Roman Syrians, who lived between AD 50-270, originate from tombs outside Palmyra's city limits. Their attire is distinctly Syrian, yet rendered in realistic Roman style.
