Unknown man

myminifactory

This man, as depicted by this terracotta bust, remains unknown despite being a signed and dated (June 1786) work. He sports a periwig, with his queue tied off with a ribbon. His broad collared coat boasts three buttons on each side. Above the lapels, a lace frill and the collar of a waistcoat are visible. A stock binds his neck. The sculptor behind this piece, Pierre Merard (died 1800), was once a pupil of Edmé Bouchardon (1698-1762) and showcased his work at Paris' Salons in the 1790s. He passed away in 1800. His recorded output consists largely of busts and portrait medallions. Gallery location: Europe, Room 4, case WN Courtesy of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London
