University of Newcastle Callahan Campus road cut
sketchfab
The University of Newcastle's Callaghan Campus boasts an enviable location in western Newcastle, nestled among Permian rocks that form the Tomago Coal Measures. Visitors can easily spot these outcrops on the higher points of the campus, particularly in the Inner City Bypass road cut near the Earth Sciences building. The hill opposite this cutting is capped by the Waratah Sandstone, while on the nearby side, the Shortland Formation comes into view between the concrete supports. This formation represents the uppermost part of the Tomago Coal Measures, whereas the Waratah Sandstone marks the base of the overlying Newcastle Coal Measures. The rocks in this transition indicate a significant drop in relative sea level at the time they were deposited. Characteristically, the Shortland Formation comprises shallow marine deposits of shales with intermittent dropstones, while the Waratah Sandstone was formed in a shoreline environment. Compass is 12 centimeters long.
