Universal Smart Phone Microscope Mount Remix
thingiverse
This is a remix of user Universal Camera Phone/Microscope Adapter by ggoss. Modifications include: Accommodating 5mm hex bolts (five at 25mm x three and two at 50mm); Including permanently friction-welded hex bolt retainer caps; Providing channels for applying hot glue which, when cool, acts as rubbery grips (eyepiece & phone grips) and featuring a larger frame to accommodate larger smartphones including the Wiko Pulp Fab. We've included the SketchUp 2015 file for those wishing to edit it using SketchUp. For more information about how and why we modified and built this mount read here: http://www.progressth.org/2016/09/3d-printing-microscopy.html Printer Settings Ultimaker is the printer brand. The printer used was the Ultimaker Original. Rafts were not printed. Supports were included. Resolution was set to low. Infill percentage ranged from 30-100%. Notes: The entire model shown was printed at 30% infill but the rails should probably be printed at at least 50% or more. Post-Printing This requires a few extra steps. Tolerances are tight, and some sanding/filing might be needed to get the hex bolts and nuts to fit; Nuts need to be friction-welded into the knobs (or super-glued); Retaining covers need to be friction-welded (or super-glued) over the hex bolts when in place and apply hot glue into the channels ensuring it fills them completely. When cooled, the hot glue will act as rubbery grips, held in place by the shape of the channels. Note on Friction Welding Friction welding involves using a short length of 3D printing filament (PLA) placed in a small collet of a rotary tool set on its lowest speed. Use safety glasses and be mindful that no one else is around because pieces will inevitably fly. Put slight pressure on the spinning filament at the joint you are trying to weld and keep it there until the friction melds the filament then slowly create a "bead" across the joint. It takes some practice but once you get the hang of it, it is stronger than glue usually as good as if it were printed (sometimes stronger).
