Introducing a standalone laser attachment system for RepRap-style 3D printers! However, exercise caution as lasers can cause blindness or burns if not used properly. Adhere to industry standards; search online for guidelines since I'm not an expert on them. By utilizing this system, you assume full responsibility for the safety of individuals and property affected by its usage/misuse. James Sesler is not liable for damages of any kind. This open-source idea and code are released with the hope they will be useful to the community, but without promising their utility to anyone. The system involves switching a laser driver circuit on and off. It now includes a safety toggle or door switch and a light (updated August 26, 2013). The sketch reads voltage from an Analog Pin "0" and triggers digital pin 9 if the voltage is higher than the set value. This high signal activates a MOSFET transistor to enable power flow to the laser driver circuit, relay, motor, or other load. Attach a DC motor to the extruder's stepper motor shaft on a RepRap-style 3D printer to control the laser. When the stepper turns, the laser is active; when it stops, the laser shuts off, allowing the 3D printer to function as a laser cutter/engraver without modifying firmware or hardware. Simply remove filament from the extruder, lower heat, and attach the laser diode. To create tool paths for cutting, follow this example of creating a square.
