A universal joint, also termed as universal coupling, U-joint, Cardan joint, Hardy-Spicer joint or Hooke's joint, is a component in a rigid rod that permits it to 'bend' in any direction and is commonly employed in shafts transferring rotary motion. It comprises two hinges positioned closely together but oriented at 90° to each other and connected by a cross shaft. However, the universal joint doesn't function as a constant velocity joint.
