Universal Filament Spool Rollers - using 1" PVC & printed ends for 8mm rod
thingiverse
I was looking for a versatile spool roller for my latest custom printer, featuring a state-of-the-art Diamind Hotend that enables three-color mixing. I required a three-spool roller that would allow effortless and swift changes to filament spools, as well as the ability to accommodate various width and diameter spools. This particular model exceeded my expectations and rolls with remarkable ease, requiring minimal resistance. To enhance its functionality, I designed custom mounts to incorporate extra 8mm rod I had on hand. Subsequently, I created an end-cap/bushing that perfectly fits inside 1-inch PVC and serves a dual purpose - preventing spools from slipping off the edge while allowing me to cut the PVC to any width. To secure the bar in place, I fabricated end mounts, which I reinforce with a couple of 8mm washers at each end to prevent the rollers from binding. The current design is tailored to fit 1-inch 80/20 extrusion, but can be easily adapted to various other mounting options. Upcoming enhancements will include upgraded bushings that house skateboard bearings within 1-inch PVC, although this feature is not strictly necessary given the roller's exceptional smoothness; these bearing-equipped bushings could also function with 8mm threaded rod.
