Universal Filament Spool Holder -REMIX- Less Hardware

thingiverse

Remix of in_the_garage's Universal Filament Spool Holder - http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:581788 Re-designed to use less hardware, eliminating threaded rods and nuts altogether. While I still recommend aluminum tubes, printable tubes are now an option. Press four 608, 608-Z, 608-RS, 608-ZZ or 608-2RS bearings onto the two sides first, then fit in the aluminum or printed tubes. Finally, install the base to hold everything together. Adding silicone stick-on feet to the bottom is recommended but optional. I could have optimized this design for more economical filament use, but I wanted to maintain its original look and feel as much as possible. Remixed in TinkerCAD: https://tinkercad.com/things/0T5H7uTWUVM EDIT: I've changed the default orientation of the Side piece. Added photos of the first print. Next steps include adding tolerance to the keys and key slots, which required some filing to get a snug fit. Still waiting on bearings and aluminum materials. Inspiration Modular design and hardware reduction inspired by Chrlee's Ball Bearing Filament Holder - http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2221639 Hardware Bearings 608 bearings are available on Amazon, AliExpress or your local skateboard shop. Some sporting goods stores may carry them. Alternatively, repurpose an old pair of inline skates from a thrift store. About bearings: The Z, ZZ, RS and 2RS labels refer to whether the bearing has metal shields (Z) or rubber shields (RS) on one or both sides. For this project, it won't make much difference. You'll also encounter ABEC ratings, which indicate acceptable tolerances. Anything above ABEC-5 is likely overkill. Use what you have, prefer or can affordably get. A 608 bearing has a 22mm outside diameter, 7mm width and an 8mm diameter hole. Aluminium Tube If you need aluminum tubes, Metal Supermarkets (https://www.metalsupermarkets.com) seems well-represented across North America. If you have suppliers for other regions, share them in the comments. You'll need two Aluminum or Stainless Steel Tubes with a 1" (25mm) outside diameter and an inside diameter of 7/8" (22mm), with a length of 3 7/8" (98mm). A 1" OD is a common tubing size, so it shouldn't be difficult to find. Just ensure the ID will fit your bearing snugly. (The printed roller's length is 97mm due to a tolerance adjustment.)
