Union Ironclads

Union Ironclads

thingiverse

You frantically rush about, chaos erupts all around you. Amidst the din, someone shouts "The Rebels have breached the blockade!" Your stomach drops at the thought of Norfolk and Hampton Roads falling into their hands. You dash to the dock, board your ship, the USS Monitor, and give the order to shovel as much coal as possible. As you slowly back away from the dock, maneuvering out into the channel, you're aware that the Rebels have already sunk two ships. You're the Union's only hope if this behemoth is going to be stopped. Reaching Hampton Roads, you survey the devastation before you: the USS Cumberland lies submerged, while the USS Congress has run aground. As you prepare for battle, the iron monster emerges from its lair. You steam ahead, meeting it head-on. At the center of Hampton Roads, you peer down the barrel of a 14-inch gun. You wait until the monster is in full fury before giving the order to fire! FDOOM! FDOOM! CLANG! CLANG! Your shells bounce off its metal hide, causing little damage. RELOAD! Your men rush around, reloading the guns and preparing for the next shot. Suddenly, your entire ship shudders, and you almost lose your footing as enemy cannonballs crash into your vessel. You peer through the gunport and see the Rebel monster slipping past your ship. SHE'S GETTING AWAY, MEN! LET'S SHOW THEM THIS SHIP IS NO IDLE THREAT! The newly designed turret on your ship begins to slowly turn, bringing your guns to bear on your foe. FIRE AS SHE BEARS! FDOOM! FDOOM! CLANG! CLANG! Again, your shots bounce off with little effect. You continue the battle for several hours, firing back and forth relentlessly but dealing no significant damage. As the tide begins to recede, the Rebel ship must return to port or risk running aground. This day has proven that the era of wooden ships and iron men is over. The Union Ironclad set can be combined with the Confederate Ironclad set. These models are scaled in roughly 1/600 scale, allowing for easy adaptation to any desired scale. Ships currently included in this set: USS Monitor USS Passaic USS Canonicus Update: November 12, 2018 Model dimensions have been converted to metric to alleviate slicer issues. Added models: USS Milwaukee USS Dictator USS Onondaga USS Puritan USS Miantonomoh Update: March 25, 2019 Separate models with bases removed have been added. Unlike the Confederate ironclads, many Union monitors were built by class, meaning most of them were essentially identical. As a result, this set will only include the first-in-class ships and one-off vessels like the USS Onondaga. Although this set is smaller than the Confederate set, I'm more than happy to build and upload specific ships upon request. Dictator and Miantonomoh have awnings/hurricane decks around their smokestacks. Small pads have been modeled for drilling holes and inserting wire supports for the awning. As with the Confederate set, I'll upload ships as they're completed.
