Union (Federal) Cipher Disc (Caesar/Vigenère Cipher Wheel)
thingiverse
A replica of the Federal Cipher Disk is created with laser cutting. The SVG file consists of multiple layers that can be combined in various ways depending on the material to be cut. For acrylic, the layers - engrave disc 1, engrave disc 2, cut disc 1, cut disc 2, and deep engrave disc 1 - are used to create a larger disc with a circular pocket. This pocket allows the smaller disc to rotate freely without additional fixation. For wood, the layers - engrave disc 1, engrave disc 2, cut disc 1 (twice), inner cut disc 1, and cut disc 2 - result in a back plate, an outer ring, and an inner disc. The ring is glued to the back plate, while the inner disc can move freely inside the ring. For paper and cardboard, the layers - engrave disc 1, engrave disc 2, cut disc 1, cut disc 2, center hole disc 1, and center hole disc 2 - lead to two discs with concentric holes. These discs can be mounted together using a clip or pin. This method also works well for other materials when a screw is used to mount the discs. See my Confederate Cipher Disk and Alberti Cipher Disk for example images of finished discs. Additional information and version history are available at https://gitlab.com/tickelton/things
