Unified MagBall Effector & Extruder WARNING: DO NOT ORDER UMBEE METAL PARTS FROM SHAPEWAYS UNTIL THIS MESSAGE IS DELETED. WE HAVE AN ISSUE WITH BALL BEARINGS. This 3D printer extruder, DeltaBot effector, and MagBall arm attachments combination creates a compact direct drive print system for most solid and elastomeric filaments. At the core of this extruder is the powerful PG35L-048 geared stepper motor and MK8 style drive gear, paired with a spring loaded idler pinch bearing. On top are magnetic zero backlash mounts for MagBall attachment, and on the bottom is the popular E3D v6 or Lite6 hot end. This compact extruder can handle NinjaFlex, TPU, and high temperature exotic filaments. If there's enough interest, we'll bundle components into a kit. Let us know by emailing sales@ultiBots.com or call 1-772-257-9019 (Monday to Friday, Eastern Time). To view full size images, click the X in the top right corner. Availability GEN2 components are for sale at UltiBots.com and Shapeways.com. Support us by purchasing from our store; this design requires a significant amount of time investment. For GEN1 metal parts, you may need to lightly grind with Dremel for a snug fit on the E3D groove mount. This isn't necessary for GEN2. Current files are located at GitHub.com/UltiBots/UMBEE History Our initial DeltaBot printers used Bowden style extruders that struggled to print filaments like NinjaFlex reliably. We replaced this with our Micro Extruder design, and the results were impressive. This led us to incorporate it into our V-Slot based Delta printer. Credit goes to Nick Foley for pioneering metal parts from Shapeways and our PG35L-048 geared stepper motor. Without his efforts, this adaptation wouldn't exist. GEN1 Update... The UMBEE received the metal parts back from Shapeways... WOW! Tolerances, edges, finish are fantastic. After minor grinding, it assembled flawlessly. The first test print exceeded all expectations. GEN2 Update... Initial assembly is impressive. The groove mount on the v6 heatsink fits perfectly without modification. Adjustments will be made to widen the body filament feed protrusion for a 2mm recess underneath. This will allow approximately 2mm of PTFE tube to sit in the recess when fed from below, secured once the heat break is installed. Calculations: The single wall cylinder above was printed at 119mm/sec based on a quick frame count in Premier Pro. There were 396 frames for 10 revolutions at 30 frames per second. This equates to 1.32 seconds per revolution and, given its 50mm diameter or 157mm circumference, this calculates to 119mm/sec. Overall, we're extremely pleased with the results. GEN2 will feature improvements such as adjusting the distance between MagBalls (from 45mm to 43mm), the E3D groove for a better fit, and moving the bearing holder in by 1mm to minimize the gap between drive shaft bearings and retainers.
