I was brainstorming my design by soliciting feedback from individuals familiar with people who live with disabilities. The overwhelming response centered around difficulties with grasping, which inspired me to create something that would facilitate the ability to grasp small objects requiring delicate hand movements. My couplers are crafted from Ninjatek Semiflex material, ensuring they revert to their original shape even after stretching. This flexibility is a major advantage as it allows for the creation of numerous handles tailored to individual needs, as well as the development of tools that can aid in other tasks. So far, I've designed a large grip for those who struggle to form a fist and a slip-on grip for individuals with even less finger control. The couplers have been effective in gripping slender objects like pens, toothbrushes, spoons, and forks. Given the importance of eating in daily life, I aimed to create something that would improve spoon and fork grip, making mealtime easier. Additionally, I designed a soda cap opener because who doesn't enjoy a cold drink? I've included instructions on how to create your own coupler as a starting point for further customization.
