Shalmaneser III dominated Assyria as king from 859-824 BC, following in the footsteps of his father Ashurnasirpal II. He led a relentless campaign against the eastern tribes, Babylonians, and nations of Mesopotamia and Syria, as well as Kizzuwadna and Urartu. His armies boldly pushed into Lake Van and the Taurus Mountains; the Hittites at Carchemish were forced to submit to tribute payments, and the kingdoms of Hamath and Aram Damascus were brought under control. Shalmaneser III's annals from the 850s BC mark the first recorded appearance of Arabs and Chaldeans in history.
