Pope Julius II, a man of fierce reputation known as "The Fearsome Pope" and "The Warrior Pope", Giuliano della Rovere by birth, took the papal throne from November 1, 1503 until his passing in 1513. His tenure was marked by an aggressive foreign policy, grand architectural projects, and generous support for the arts – he ordered the demolition and reconstruction of St. Peter's Basilica, as well as Michelangelo's masterful decoration of the Sistine Chapel ceiling. Besides a vigorous military strategy, he personally commanded troops into combat on at least two separate occasions.
