Pope Julius II, known as "The Fearsome Pope" and "The Warrior Pope," was born Giuliano della Rovere in 1443 and ruled as Pontiff from November 1, 1503 until his passing in 1513. His papacy was characterized by a dynamic foreign policy, grandiose construction projects, and lavish patronage for the arts – he ordered the demolition and reconstruction of St. Peter's Basilica, while also overseeing Michelangelo's frescoes on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel's interior. In addition to his aggressive military tactics, Pope Julius II personally led troops into combat on at least two separate occasions.
