Pope Julius II (1443 – 1513), nicknamed "The Fearsome Pope" and "The Warrior Pope", was a man named Giuliano della Rovere who became Pope from November 1st, 1503 until his death in 1513. He left an indelible mark on history with his aggressive foreign policy, grandiose building projects, and generous patronage for the arts – he masterminded the demolition and reconstruction of St. Peter's Basilica, as well as Michelangelo's breathtaking decoration of the Sistine Chapel ceiling. To complement his robust military strategy, he even led troops into combat on at least two separate occasions himself.
