Bioshock is a game set in a dystopian underwater city called Rapture. Built by business magnate Andrew Ryan, this once-thriving metropolis has deteriorated into chaos and decay. The city's downfall was precipitated by its inhabitants' addiction to a substance known as ADAM. This genetic material allows users to unlock new abilities and enhance their physical prowess but at the cost of severe withdrawal symptoms when not used. Players assume the role of Jack, a young man who crash-lands in Rapture aboard a plane called the Flying Dutchman. As he explores the city, Jack discovers that Ryan's regime has been overthrown by a group led by Brigid Tenenbaum, a scientist seeking to overthrow the tyrannical leader and free Rapture from its addiction-ridden woes. Throughout his journey, Jack must confront various enemies, including security systems, splicers, and Big Daddies. The latter are massive, genetically modified creatures that roam the city in search of ADAM to satiate their insatiable hunger.
