Underside of 19-century crucible steel works
sketchfab
In 1871, Sanderson Brothers constructed a factory producing crucible steel in Darnall, Sheffield, UK. The facility featured multiple small crucible furnaces arranged side by side, each with its own unique setup. This model displays the underside of one furnace, showcasing nearby rough versions on either side. Observe the bars forming the grate and various supporting structures holding everything together. At the far wall, a blocked channel once led to the flue, where the fire in the furnace burned hotter due to its dedicated channel. This entire operation was housed underground within a well-constructed vaulted row. The model was created from photographs taken on September 19, 2019, using Meshroom and Meshlab software. The visit was organized by the Hunter Archaeological Society. The site is a Scheduled Monument – check out https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1247446 or look for another entry matching “CRUCIBLE STEEL SHOP IN SOUTH CORNER OF SANDERSONS KAYSERS DARNALL WORKS, DARNALL ROAD”.
