Unbreakable Tube (with a string inside)
cults3d
This is the third version of an unbreakable tube. The tube shows impressive resistance to axial pressure. Axial forces are unable to break it. Accidental radial forces will cause the tube's elements to bend but not shatter. A string inside the tube builds up tension similar to "prestressed concrete." Angled tube elements will snap back into place if an elastic string is used. Using a strong string/wire makes the tube virtually unbreakable. Some results so far are: * Longer tube elements exhibit less stability. * Frequent bending can damage the edges of the tube's elements. Check the red arrows in one of the pictures for visual evidence. * The string loses tension after bending due to reduced friction on the angled parts. Things to do include: * Designing tube elements with constricted openings on both sides * Creating a rounded, more durable shape * Finding an alternative tightening mechanism Update: V3 has improved elements and optimized OpenSCAD.
