Umbilical Torus
thingiverse
Having viewed the umbilical torus sculpture at the Beckman Institute, University of Illinois, we decided to create our own version. The statue's mathematical description (available at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Umbilic_torus) wasn't straightforward for printing, so we utilized OpenSCAD to model it as a rotating triangle. Our code accomplishes the task of a rotate_extrude command with a spinning 2D triangle. The OpenSCAD file is parameterized to make adjusting the radius and size of the triangle easy. To achieve your desired dimensions, you might need to scale up the STL file. We printed it using Makerware at .2 layer thickness, with support and raft enabled.
With this file you will be able to print Umbilical Torus with your 3D printer. Click on the button and save the file on your computer to work, edit or customize your design. You can also find more 3D designs for printers on Umbilical Torus.
