UM2 Cover Hooks
youmagine
This is a simple plexiglass front door design for the Ultimaker 2. It hangs from the top and snaps into place at the top of the front plate. The design is based on the original by pmdude, but with some key improvements. In using the original design, the plastic would weaken and deform under prolonged prints, causing the hook to sag and eventually fall off. This redesign addresses these issues head-on. To build this, start by cutting a 12" square piece of plexiglass or acrylic. I used a hardware store window pane replacement material for my project. If you're cutting it yourself, use a fine tooth circular saw and take care to smooth the edges with a small hand torch. Move quickly and repeatedly along the edge to prevent overheating and bubbling. Mark the positions of the hooks using masking tape, 2" from the outside edge on both sides. Place the hooks inside the tape markers and drill through the plexiglass using a 3 mm drill bit at high speed. This will ensure perfect alignment. Print the design using ABS (ideally) and apply an acetone treatment for a smooth, mirror-like finish. Once printed, place the hooks on the plexiglass, lining up the holes carefully. Push a piece of filament through each hole and snip it off flush with fine wire snips. Use a small soldering iron to melt the edges of the filament flat, causing it to splay out and stick to the hook. Finally, hang the assembly on the Ultimaker 2 and press down on the lower part of the hook to lock it into place on the front of the printer.
