Ultraviolet (UV) Disinfection Light
thingiverse
Ultraviolet light has been widely used for disinfection in the healthcare and medical sector. Several studies believe that UV-C light can be a viable way to combat the COVID-19 virus. I recently ordered several UV-C light bulbs (PHILIPS TUV PL-L 24W/4P) online, but I didn't have any suitable housing for them. To solve this issue, I decided to design my own light fixture and install it in one of my toilets to create a temporary 'disinfection room'. Since UV-C light is harmful to the skin, I needed a way to control the switch remotely. This project utilized an ESP-8266 based IoT switch to achieve this goal. The 2G11 Connector Housing was also designed specifically for this project. Additionally, reflectors were created using plastic hollow boards with aluminium foil applied on top using double layer tapes. Relevant reports and studies have been published on the effectiveness of UV-C light in disinfection: A recent report highlights the potential of UV light to kill the coronavirus. Another study demonstrates the efficacy of an automated multiple emitter whole-room ultraviolet C disinfection system against coronaviruses, MERS-CoV, and other pathogens. Researchers have also explored the use of UV light to reduce the transmission of tuberculosis.
