Ultra-lightweight Face Shield
thingiverse
This is still a work in progress and we are waiting on the results from our user testing. Update (10 April 2020) - A design has been added to fit on letter size acetate. The Solvespace design file should be more easily modifiable to fit different sized sheets. Updated to ver 0.13 (5 April 2020) - The locking mechanism on the tags and the profile has been optimized for a faster cut. Here is a laser cut face mask design that stands out from most others. It only uses a single sheet of acetate, making it very light (8.9 g for our sheet), fast, and cheap to produce. It attaches via a standard pair of glasses (a separate head clamp will be designed later for non-glasses users). This design is also 'ventilated', allowing warm air to rise upwards. The lightweight and ventilation features make it more comfortable than many other masks. However, this design has some disadvantages. First, it has no certification whatsoever and its effectiveness is unknown. Please do not use it in place of proper certified equipment. It also has limited 'wrap-around' protection. Finally, it requires some assembly, but this means it can also be shipped flat. We have included a video of the assembly and a quick run through the features. Since it does not require a 3D printer, it is extremely fast to produce (<1 min per mask) from a single laser cutter (we use a cheap K40). This mask may fill a small niche - those who want or need casual protection and would benefit from a very lightweight design. Security staff, general cleaners, shelf stackers, porters, receptionists, police, or checkout-staff may find it useful. It is washable, reusable, and easily modified with a pair of scissors and sellotape. We offer the design for modification, but we would be delighted with an acknowledgement if you find it useful. We recommend reducing any risk of contamination by storing the shields at 60deg for several hours before shipping. Ensure the material you use can withstand this. Also ship to the end user with the assumption that the shields are contaminated and ask them to clean them. Attached is the current instruction sheet we plan to use. It is however changing hourly, so please modify for your specific situation. We are based in Cambridge, UK. Email m.h.schwiening@googlemail.com if you would like some or help testing.
