Ultimate RJ-45 Jack Cover
thingiverse
If you have network equipment anywhere outside a clean room, those unused ports inevitably collect all sorts of dust and crud over time. To prevent this problem from arising in the first place, capping off unused ports is a smart move. I looked into commercially available dust caps but they got mixed reviews and seemed expensive. When I tried printing some from Thingiverse, none met my requirements. It turns out there's quite a bit of variation between RJ-45 jacks, so a cap that fits one is too tight for another or falls out altogether. So I designed this one which completely covers the port opening and fits a wide range of jacks including Netgear switches, TP-Link switches, D-Link switches, TRENDNet patch panels, ASUS routers, Leviton keystones, Cable Matters keystones, CE Tech (Home Depot) keystones, and ICC EZ keystones. They're easy to remove with your fingernail, so I didn't think it was worth the extra filament to include a handle. Not having a handle also makes it simple to print. For best results use Ninja SemiFlex filament, which provides just the right amount of "give." Even using this relatively expensive material, the cost works out to only $0.07 of filament per cover when I run a batch of 25 at a time as needed.
