Ultimaker Retracting Z-Probe
thingiverse
Introducing an innovative Z-probe mount for Ultimaker printers! This design features a pushbutton switch that attaches your min z endstop to your print head. By simply lowering and raising the probe, you can achieve fully automated platform sensing and printing, eliminating the need to worry about perfect z-height. A video demonstration is available at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a-A90wP4Wus. Note that this project is still a work in progress (WIP), so some aspects may not be perfect yet. To assemble, use two 2mm cube-shaped neodymium magnets, which get glued into the designated spots on "swivelmount.stl". A standard hard drive bearing with dimensions of 9.5mm OD, 6.35mm ID, and 3.17mm thickness is required for the bearing. A momentary push button switch with a lever arm similar to the Ultimaker's default design is used, and a screw in the medium-sized hole on "swingarm" serves as the target for magnet attraction. Longer screws replace the ones holding the print head together to attach the swivelmount part. Routing flexible wire to connect to the switch is another step, but this aspect requires careful attention to ensure the force exerted by the wires assists in pushing the lever arm down. Lastly, a post that the Ultimaker uses to raise and lower the sensor needs to be designed and attached using a binder clip on the platform. Leveling the printer involves homing the platform to the bottom of the printer, then raising the bed so the switching post is at the correct height to switch the lever arm. Move the head to switch down the lever arm and raise the bed slowly while it's in the middle, using endstops for stopping when the button clicks. Be cautious during the initial attempts as this design is still a work in progress (WIP). For further guidance, refer to the video demonstration.
