Ultimaker Original + Spool Holder

This is a basic spool holder designed to be mounted on the Ultimaker Original and Original + reel holder mounting plate found on the back panel. If your slicer of choice has a bridging detection feature, this model does not need support material - check out the print here. All versions of this design (80mm, 120mm, 160mm) are compatible with spools that have an internal diameter of 48mm or more. Tested spools that fit this size include those manufactured by ColorFabb, Ultimaker, MakerGeeks, MatterHackers, AIO Robotics, and NinjaTek. Chances are good if you're using a fairly standard spool size, it will fit! If you'd like to print one using a single or multi-material printer: Download the correct size spool holder for your application. The photos and video provided show the 80mm variant, which is compatible with any spool that's 80mm or less in width. The compatible spools listed above fit this size. If you're using a spool wider than average, use the 120mm or 160mm variant as necessary. Import the part into your slicer and orient it so the four prongs are flat against the build plate. The object should be oriented correctly upon import. Slice. Make sure your slicer's "detect bridging perimeters" option is enabled, and check that the underside of the part is designated as a bridge before printing via the .gcode visualizer. If your printer has build adhesion issues, a brim may be necessary. I used a 0.200mm layer height, but thicker layer heights should speed up the print significantly. Print. I used MatterHackers Build PLA. Install the holder onto the back panel of the machine by slotting it into the reel holder mounting plate and pulling down. When printing, keep a baseball bat nearby the machine in case it becomes sentient during the job. Happy printing! -Brent
