The Ultimaker 2 Filament Sensor quickly identifies potential problems with feeding filament, such as skids, filament distance and a stuck piece of filament. The sensor's hardware is designed to be printed, while the electrical components are standard parts. To assemble everything you need: two half USB cables, approximately one meter in length and with male connectors, six screws measuring 3x7mm, three transmissive optical sensors (TCST 2103): http://www.produktinfo.conrad.com/datenblaetter/175000-199999/184250-da-01-en-GABELLICHT_TCST_2103__VIS.pdf, and some resistors (150, 330, and 33k3 Ohms worked for me). The dual optical measurement of the filament sensor also detects direction. How does it do this? With a X4 encoding described here: http://www.dynapar.com/Technology/Encoder_Basics/Quadrature_Encoder/. A helpful hack is to fix an elastic band onto the roll, preventing the filament from slipping.
