Ultimaker 2 Extended Aluminum Extrusion 3D Printer

Disclaimer: The "Ultimaker 2 Extended Aluminum Extrusion 3D Printer" was developed by extending the original "Ultimaker 2 Aluminum Extrusion 3D Printer", a design crafted by Jason, a software architect from Austin, Texas, known for his work as jasonatepaint on Thingiverse. To build taller objects, this printer has more space on its z axis - an extra 100mm is available. With the same heated bed dimensions as the Ultimaker 2, the assembly offers expanded design possibilities for builders. I made adjustments in Solidworks 2014 to increase the length of the vertical aluminum extrusions, rods, and acrylic panels used in the original model. Notably, lead screw height increased by 100mm to reach a total of 400mm. Additionally, three horizontal pieces of aluminum extrusion have been incorporated into the design to improve structural integrity (you may not need these features for a production unit - that's your decision). To add more flair and protection, I chose to utilize modified acrylic side panels originally designed by lions3 from Thingiverse. More details on this innovative project are available here: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:811271. Comparing "Ultimaker 2" and "Ultimaker 2 Extended" versions: The main differences are as follows: • Four vertical aluminum extrusion pieces reach an additional height of 105mm each (totaling 500mm). • 12mm linear rods increase by the same margin, achieving a longer total length. • A lead screw measures 400mm and rises by another 100mm in elevation. • The modified printer's side panels have been altered to accommodate the extra build area created. • And three supporting horizontal aluminum extrusion pieces are newly incorporated into this assembly for greater durability. After incorporating these modifications, the Ultimaker 2 is given a boost, transforming it into its "Extended" counterpart.
